Y-Guides New Chief Training
Dad and Kids Making Memories
Congratulations, you are about to embark on a fabulous journey to making memories with your children. With a small investment of time, you can help your tribe be successful.
As Chief you are responsible for the overall tribe leadership. Experience teaches us that strong chiefs help make strong tribes. In this role do not underestimate the pride your child will have in your taking this position.
Tips for building a successful tribe:
1. Schedule Dad's meetings.
• These meetings are without children
• Important for setting the tribe meeting schedules
• Important for developing esprit de corps among the Dad's
• Successful tribes schedule regular Dad's meetings
2. Set the Tribe Meeting Schedule
• The importance of getting tribe meetings and events on everyone's calendar must not be underestimated
• When scheduling, pay attention to holidays and your school calendar
• Schedule tribe meetings at least monthly. New tribes might want to meet more often to help build relationships and to develop tribe unity.
• Set the schedule in the fall through the end of January, and in January through June
• Set schedules early and then make changes later
• Get important events on everyone's calendars early. Pick your first and second choices for Longhouse and Date Night dates and sign up as early as possible. Longhouses and Date Nights do fill up.
• Strive to personally deliver invitations for tribe meetings during the first year
3. Communicate with your tribe
• Create an email list that includes wive's email addresses
• Establish a phone tree
• Keeping Dad's informed and cohesive is vital
• Mom's help can be essential to a tribe's success
4. Use Chief's Resources
• Monthly Chief's meetings. These are usually the second Thursday of the month at 6:00PM at Saint Gabriel Catholic Church. If you can not attend a meeting, please find a substitute. The North Chief Meetings are usually the third Thursday of each month.

• Every Tribe activity earns points for your tribe. It is important to keep track of these points monthly. Point sheets are on the website
• Successful tribes earn most of their points in the following activities: Y-Guides promotions, attending Federation events, participating in community service projects and being a new tribe sponsor
• Point totals determine Tribal Awards
1200 points = Honor Tribe
2000 points = Golden Light
2500 points = Skajuna
3200 points = Los Indios
• Below are examples of how to earn points
Tribe meeting or activity = 30 points
Dad's meeting = 20 points
Chief meeting = 50 points
Federation events = 100 points
Community Service Project = 100 points
Assisting with promotions = 40 points
6. Delegate and assign other Tribe officers:
• Medicine Man – the assistant chief – every strong organization has a good second in command – allows for training of next year's chief.
• Wampum Bearer – responsible for the collection and safe keeping of monies and tribal equipment
• Tally Keeper – responsible for keeping attendance, calling roll at meetings and tracking progress to achieving awards – keeps up to date tribe roster.
